How to follow up on a job application by email

Short answer

Give it one to two weeks after applying, then email the recruiter or hiring manager by name. Mention the role and date you applied, add one specific reason you are a strong fit that goes beyond your resume, and ask politely about next steps. If you applied through a referral, mention the referrer in the first line.

Questions people ask

How long after applying for a job should I follow up?

One to two weeks is typical, unless the posting gives a closing date — then follow up shortly after it.

How do you write a follow-up email for a job application?

Name the role and the date you applied, give one specific reason you fit, and ask about next steps. Keep it short and attach your resume.

What if the job posting says no follow-ups?

Respect it. Follow-ups against explicit instructions can count against you.
